Friday Sketchdump #7
Another stressful week is over, and once again I didn't draw very much (and the stuff I drew is very sloppy). But still enough to make a sketchdump of course!

My first attempt to draw Brer Rabbit. Thanks again for the model sheets, Henrieke!
He's a great character, and it's a shame that he never appears in german Disney Magazines

Otter. I like how this one came out, even though the pose is anything but original.

An Ermine. The black tip is missing, though.

Various Fineliner sketches, including Thylacine, banded Palm Civet, Kangaroo, Ferret

Thylacines

Thylacine
I just finished reading this scientific report about Thylacines, which I actually only got because there were alot of photos and illustrations in there I wanted to use as reference. But now I'm really interrested in Thylacines, so I dedicate a post to them.
Thylacines, also referred to as Tasmanian Tiger or Tasmanian Wolf aren't - as the name would suggest - Canids or Felines. They are actually Marsupials, with the closest still existing relative being the Tasmanian Devil.
I have collected quite much reference pictures and photos of Thylacines for drawing purposes here, but also if you're not trying to draw them you might be interested in them as there are a few rare ones included.
I've drawn alot of Thylacines until now, so here they are (in chronological order, including mostly older artworks):

Also toony, inspired by the mascot of this site

For completeness, I repost this one.

quick Thylacine Sketch in openCanvas

I made this one with a 0.05mm fineliner.. sketch can be seen here

This is a sketch of a Thylacinus potens, using this skeleton as reference. Notice the shorter legs and the smaller head compared to a Thylacinus cynocephalus
Finally, for more information about thylacines, I recommend the following sites:

Friday Sketchdump #6
Wow.. it's a shame that this is the first post this week, but I've been busy getting everything done in my apartment, because I'll make a housewarming party tomorrow.
As I was busy, there aren't many quality Sketches to show.. but at least some:

Lemur with fineliner, will probably stay unfinished as I messed up the eyes

Various Sketches, I usually don't show such sketches, but I am short on sketches this week

Where to find this Comics?
While looking for random Stuff with Google, I found this:

I know that it's from Lynn Karp, and the Comics name is "Spencer Spook".
No results on eBay, not even a Wikipedia Entry about the author.
Friday Sketchdump #5
Okay, this week I drew definately VERY much as this is only a small portion of the sketches I did.
Most of them are very inspired by Tex Avery and John K as I watched alot of their toons recently.
I also have been to a Comic Meeting yesterday, which was awesome! I even met an artist who worked for disney 15 years ago, and he gave me some really useful tips.. and told me my hands suck, but.. yes.. they actually do, but practicing hands is boring. But he explained me how imporant hands are for the whole expression, so I guess I'll end up drawing alot of hands next week.

Screwball Squirrel! My first attempt to draw him, yet there are many things that went wrong.

A more abstract Kangaroo in oC.

First attempt on a character by John K.

Second attempt, drawn at the Comic meeting.

A wacky lemur I drew at the meeting after someone asked me to draw something really weird.

Very quick dynamic pose sketch.

Drawn in starbucks. They played no Jazz today, sadly.
end.
John K. is a god
The way he draws expressions is amazing.
Be sure to visit his blog, All kinds of Stuff for great articles about animation-related stuff.
Friday Sketchdump #4
I love my Sanford pencils!! thanks for the tip, Herbie
Here are some more or less sloppy sketches I drew this week, mostly while sitting in a café:
![]()
She resembles Stella Skunk from Over the Hedge because I was looking at the OTH Model sheets while drawing this... sadly I only have the sheets in really crappy quality, so if anyone has bigger Versions of them, I'd be happy if you could send them to me
![]()
Sammy Squirrel from the Screwball Squirrel cartoon, drawn from memory, that's why he doesn't look that much like Sammy at all.
![]()
Rat (very Ratatouille inspired) in an expectant pose
![]()
A quick Kangaroo sketch I drew for the nice cashier lady at the café when she asked us if we could draw one for her. (anatomy is really bad..)
FERRETS!
I tried drawing some ferrets in different styles.. still unsure about the head shape and the rest of the body.. if you have any suggestions, just comment
end.
nice openCanvas Session
Just had a nice openCanvas Session with 3 other cool Cartoonists.
Blue Sketches are by me, grey ones by Yamavu, black ones by kipper and red ones by goldenrod.

This is probably my favourite Cartoon by Tex Avery and Preston Blair now. Even though the Styles (especially the two Squirrels) are different, they blend together really well and the Animation is just super-smooth ![]()
Here are some related modelsheets/keyframes:
These should last a while
72 Sanford col-erase pencils. They rule, because you can erase them. Also they were really cheap! The disney animator I met in August gave one to me, but I framed the pencil rather than using it.
Well, now I have enough pencils for some years I think.
By the way, I thought this would be a good Idea at first, but it turned out really scary (also, I never tried Kool-Aid):
Slackline Fun
Even though it had only 10°C/50°F outside, I went out for some slacklining today. Slacklining is basically balancing and doing tricks on a nylon webbing which is stretched between two trees or whatever is there. Mine is (only) 10 meters long, but that's the perfect length for the two trees in our garden.
At least the cold ground gave me a good reason to stay on the line
Friday Sketchdump #3
A little belated, but here are some of the few sketches I did this week.
For the first time I drew some birds after reading a the "How to draw Cartoons for Comic Strips" book from Christopher Hart. I'll probably try to get one of his other books, "How to draw cartoon animals" too, because it looks good. It's a shame he only writes really crappy books about drawing manga now.

Some thylacine sketches

More Birds! Including Chris Hart influence.

A quick ferret I'm not really satisfied with, also the pose isn't convincing. He is supposed to be standing on the ground and looking up, with the viewer looking at the ground.
