Horton is a badass

Horton hears a who was actually a pretty good movie, I enjoyed it alot.

They probably feared it could be too successful when they made these awful movie posters, probably with the intent to scare kids away.

For comparison, here's real Horton:

Friday Sketchdump #50 (christmas edition)

Some wondered why I didn't post a Sketchdump for over a month. The answer is simple: I had tons of assignments to do in december, had to get christmas presents + do a ton of christmas cards, so not much time for sketching.
This is already the #50, quite alot to me.. I really made an improvement since I started, but there's still much left to learn.

Expressions
This is a funny meme where you have to draw expressions for (imprecise) words

christmas ferret card
This was an earlier Idea for a christmas card, but I went for something else as I basically did this last year already

Christmas Presents

Wow! Loads of awesome stuff I got this christmas. Also I was reminded once again how lucky I am to have such a great family. :)

Anyway, here's what I got:
My Christmas Presents
At first, christmas cards from friends around the world (thanks to everyone!), an Ukulele (finally!), another bright orange DryFIT shirt (can't have enough of those), Glicos from our japanese friends (awesome candys), A TOTALLY AWESOME TEX AVERY FIURINE (which I'll explain later), Pralines, Disney Comics, Books (a Thriller and one about Toilets), DVD (Hollow Man), a laminating machine and Eric Goldbergs "Animation Crash course", which seems to be the best book about animation since Preston Blairs.

Tex Avery figurine from “The Early bird dood it”

So this is the figurine I got. It's from "The early bird dood it".
To refresh your memory, here's a screencap:

The figurine is totally awesome and I just posted this to make everyone jealous ;)

Luckily the gifts I gave to others were also liked (Beer, Giant Microbes, DVDs, other stuff). The most fun thing was probably the tiny RC helicopter I gave to one of my brothers. It's totally fun and survived many crashes already. I should get one for myself too..

Tiny RC Helicopter
Amazing that this actually works (very well even). It just needs quite some practice.

Christmas Card

I just quickly drew this for my christmas presents. Feel free to use it if you like, just put in something like "for Hans" into the bubble.

Creating your own custom aperture

It's common knowledge that the bokeh in pictures will reveal what the aperture looks like. A good example are lights turning into stars when you do long exposure with small amerture, like f16.

For this trick you will need a lens with big aperture, like f1.8 or f1.4, otherwise your custom aperture and the internal aperture will overlap (or you need to make yours really small). I used an old Nikkor f1.4 manual focus lens.

Cut out any shape you want out of a opaque material and put it directly in front of your lens - voila. It looks like this:
custom snowflake-shaped aperture on a nikkor f1.4 lens

With this, I created the following cheesy shots:

another shot showing how bokeh has snowflake-shape now

custom bokeh, horray

This way you can create nice backgrounds for your christmas shots. :)

There’s no return now

I bought a Ticket: Vienna -> San Jose -> Orlando -> Vienna.
Henrieke also goes with me. First we'll attend Further Confusion in San Jose, where I'll meet alot of cartoon artists and hopefully also the Guest of Honor, Jeff Pidgeon. awesome!
After that we'll follow the invitation we got from Herbie (awesome Disney animator) and spend 2 weeks in Orlando visiting theme parks and meeting cool people.
